Doris Jean Rhodes Obituary

Doris Jean Rhodes, age 87, of Richmond, VA., passed away peacefully January 3, 2022 at Westport Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Richmond after battling congestive heart failure since March.

Doris was born March 13, 1934 in Bridgeton, NJ. to Edward Earl and Naomi Krouse Kellmyer and grew up in Carney's Point, NJ. She was a 1952 graduate of Penns Grove High School and was employed by E.I. DuPont DeNemours before marriage and motherhood. Other occupations include switchboard operator for United Services/Bankers Security, retail associate for Woodward and Lothrop, Hecht's and Strawbridge and Clothier, and daycare provider in her own home for many years.

She was a devoted homemaker and loved baking, gardening, sewing, reading, and most of all family time. She taught Sunday School in Carneys Point, was a Girl Scout leader and member of the Garden Club in Stony Brook, NY., and moved to Laurel, MD. in 1969. Laurel was the home her children all remember. She was a 4-H leader, held youth fellowship meetings in her home, and hosted wedding receptions. She was passionate about painting ceramics and taught classes at her local shop.

Her final move was to Richmond, VA. in 2004, and she became an active member of Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church, where she participated in Bible study and shared her talents in many ways. But her biggest joy in life was her six children and their families, and she leaves behind a legacy of loving and caring.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, brother Edward E. "Sonny" Kellmyer Jr., husbands William Montgomery McVaugh and Richard Walker Rhodes, daughter Nancy Landry, and sons-in-law John Mader and Randolph Low.

She is survived by her five children Linda Mader of Richmond, VA., Debra Low of Columbia, MD., William Rhodes of Southampton, NJ., Barbara Rhodes of Columbia, MD., and Timothy Rhodes (Heather) of Newark, DE.; fifteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Her celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church, Fort King Road, Richmond, at 11:30 a.m., with visitation from 10:30 to 11:30. There will be a private graveside service at Lawnside Cemetery in Woodstown, NJ. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, she requested memorial donations to Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church, 9801 Fort King Road, Richmond, VA. 23229.
